I’m not 100% sure, but I’m fairly certain using the discs will wipe your computer.

It shouldn’t have an effect. You could try using multiplatform clients such as Adium.

If you use the startup discs, you will lose any and all information you’ve put on your computer. If you’re unable to correct the problem even after going to the Apple support pages, I suggest moving/copying/downloading all the information you want saved to an external hard drive. Once you’ve saved all your information, use the startup discs to retrieve the lost program.

You may also want to consider looking for updates for the Mac OS X.10.3. If there is a current update, its possible you’ll be able to download ichat once the update is in place.
