How do those websites that sell books for a penny each make a profit?

A lot of websites, like thriftbooks.com, sell books for a penny each. All the purchaser has to pay is the shipping and handling. Since the shipping and handing goes to the mailing company, only the penny goes to the book retailer. How do websites like that stay open? There aren’t very many advertisements on the homepage and I imagine that the warehouse to house all of these books takes up a lot of space.

How does that work?

I’m not exactly sure, but this is one way I look at it:
Sometimes books are donated usually, which means they don’t loose any money to begin with.
Selling them for pennies makes more people want to buy the books. It all adds up in the end for them.
So in the end they don’t loose anything, but gain something even if it’s not that much.
